The European Theatre Today – The Plays 5
Download PDFETC’s “The European Theatre Today” series worked with national juries to select the most innovative and exciting productions from across Europe and introduce them to European audiences and directors. The book is organised by country and presents summaries in English and French for several plays from each country. This edition, Plays 5, reviews around 80 plays from 1999 to 2001.
Introduction to the original production:
The fifth edition of the book on new theatre plays in Europe between 1999 and 2001, published by the European Theatre Convention, allows us to take stock of the situation in the aftermath of the wave of new authors which appeared on the scene in the mid-1990s. While some of the authors were acclaimed and others disappeared, the main impact of this important revival was that it resulted in the emergence of a large number of new plays for reviewers to assess.
Two increasing trends in the reviewing process should be brought to our attention. While the majority of plays selected are already acclaimed in their country of origin, the future success of some of them, and their authors, is decided by the reviewers.
For this reason, this book constitutes a bible of emerging drama writing in Europe. While our reviewers do not claim responsibility for the success of the most well-known European plays, our publication is nonetheless a valuable and a useful source of information.
As in previous editions, a few European countries are not represented. This is due to a number of reasons, including unavoidable delays and the inability to contact key people at crucial moments. However, they do not detract from the overall value of this publication which we hope will serve you well.
