European Theatre Today – The Plays 3
Download PDFETC’s “The European Theatre Today” series worked with national juries to select the most innovative and exciting productions from across Europe and introduce them to European audiences and directors. The book is organised by country and presents summaries in English and French for several plays from each country. This edition, Plays 3, reviews around 80 plays from July 1995 to May 1997.
Introduction to the original publication:
Is it necessary to attach importance to dates and anniversaries?
The ETC will be ten years old in 1998, so may we be forgiven in congratulating ourselves, especially, for seeing there a nice promise for the future. Similarly, to reach the third issue of this work isn't without meaning. It proves its unquestionable usefulness. The first two issues, published in 1993 and 1995 have, despite youthful faults, met numerous readers, and - even better- performers: nearly 35 plays presented have been produced in different countries.
Without claiming that our publication was ever the only element of decision, the great number of requests for information which have been addressed to the general delegation demonstrates how much this guide is invaluable. The present issue (number 3) covers the period between July 95 and May 97.
We've tried to be still nearer an inaccessible perfection.
What to do to avoid some omissions, to compel dramatists who remain reluctant?
Nevertheless, the information about the plays and their authors are richer, the synopsis better presented. Patricia Canellis, general delegate of the Convention and Lieven Struye, administrative director of the KVS, have worked at the realisation of this book with the conscientiousness, the competence and the talent they're known for. Let them be thanked for that.
May the success of this third issue satisfy them and encourage us to carry on in the same way.
