The study, developed in partnership with the Akademie für Theater und Digitalitat in Dortmund/Germany, and digital theatre researcher Katie Hawthorne, analyses artistic production, digital dissemination, strategies and digital business models in ETC Member Theatres.


What is 'digital theatre'? And did European Theatres really make more of it during the COVID-19 pandemic?

Digital Theatre – Digital Strategies and Business Models in European Theatre collects responses from 19 theatres in 17 countries for the period 2019–21.

It provides data on digital productions, budgets, ticket sales, investments, personnel and training – and also areas of digital growth, challenge, and disagreement.

  • Digital Ticket sales up 772% from 2019-21

  • 286% increase in digital roles in European theatres

  • 78.9% of theatres agree that digital theatre helps to train staff in new skills

  • Theatres report difficulties in tracking, quantifying and
    qualifying viewership for digital theatre

The study is part of a research series commissioned by the European Theatre Convention (ETC). It was written by Dr. Katie Hawthorne. Created in partnership with the Academy for Theatre and Digitality in Dortmund.
